A superb 24”x 36” oil on canvas “ View of Kitzbuhel in Winter” by the well-known 19th/20th Austrian artist Alois Arnegger (1879-1963). He was a landscape painter who was best known for two extreme seasonal landscapes. Early in his career he concentrated on his homeland painting scenes in the Austrian Alps. His most popular are winter scenes with sunlight glinting off the snow covered mountains and quite often snow laden fir trees and in his larger paintings featuring a quaint village in the mountain valley as in the subject painting. His artistic skills used to develop the landscape are seen in this painting through his use of light and depth of perspective that draws you into the painting past the fir trees, following the tracks in the snow to the village nestled in the valley.

Arnegger studied at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Vienna under Robert Russ and August Eisenmenger. For a time in the 1920’s and 30’s, he spent his summers painting the Mediterranean coast producing numerous paintings of views of Capri, San Remo and Naples. Arnegger’s paintings are characterized in the vibrancy of the colors, use of light and soft brushstrokes showing wonderful tonal values throughout his landscapes. Later in his life he returned to his homeland of Austria where he returned to painting Alpine scenes. Alois Arnegger passed away in his hometown of Vienna in 1963. His son Gottried follows in his father’s footsteps as an artist as well.

His paintings are in many galleries and private collections throughout Europe and the United States. Paintings of Arnegger’s currently may be found in galleries and at auction for sale in the $ 5-18,000.00 price range depending on subject and size.
